Country Roots Star Kim Carson Brings “Real Deal Country” to the Acura Stage at Jazz Fest 2008

Country Roots Star Kim Carson Brings “Real Deal Country” to the Acura Stage at Jazz Fest 2008

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) April 24, 2008

Country Roots singer Kim Carson will command the Acura Stage at The New Orleans 2008 Jazz and Heritage Festival on Friday, April 25 at 12:30 PM. Carson is no stranger to Jazz Fest, having played the festival eleven times in fifteen years with her unique sound which evokes what critics call “the real deal country.” Carson’s influences include Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and the great Loretta Lynn. This year’s opener for the seven day festival sees Carson’s star aligned with names such as Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Susan Cowsill and Sheryl Crow.

After Kim Carson’s 2005 Jazz Fest performance, Live New Orleans said, “Kim Carson was in full control. With her broad smile and swagger, she emitted an undeniable aura. She and her band had such a hold on the songs that the Jazz Fest performance on Friday was a no-lose situation.”

Alex Rawls of New Orleans’ OffBeat Magazine has said, “Kim Carson is as fine a roots/country singer as someone like Rosie Flores. Her brand of high Octane Twang is traditional without being retro.”

Readers of OffBeat named Kim Carson “Best Country Artist” eight times. Her concert album “Live at Tipitina’s” was voted “Best Country Album” of 2004. She’s a hard working, full-time musician performing in old-time music clubs from Texas to Florida to Nashville and has appeared on several “Outlaw country” shows with David Allan Coe, Junior Brown, Dale Watson, Jesse Dayton, John Anderson, The Hollisters and Loretta Lynn.

Kim Carson is a well-known face on the Gulf music scene and is a staple at Bay Fest in Mobile, Alabama and the Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Rounding out the venue roster, Carson is a regular at the dancehall in legendary Luckenbach, Texas and has played the famous Bluebird Café in Nashville, Tennessee.

Carson and her band, with members from the Casualties and Buffalo Speedway, did a three-month tour of Europe last summer and will return to the European Union for twelve weeks, performing in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Norway and the Netherlands.

“I really enjoy traveling and the people who come out to hear live music are my kind of people,” Carson says about her European audiences. “Country music is like Levi’s,” Carson says. “It’s very American. Europeans are fascinated by our western heritage.”

Carson has just released a new compilation CD. “Looking Back — 1997 ‘Till Now.” There are three new songs on the compilation, which is a retrospective of her last five recordings.

This year marks the first time since Hurricane Katrina delivered a body blow to the Gulf Coast that a seventh day will be added to the festival, which runs April 25-27 & May 1-4, 2008. The extra day is a “sign that Jazz Fest — and the city of New Orleans — is returning to normal,” said Quint Davis, Jazz Fest’s producer/director.

Hurricane Katrina hit Carson and many New Orleans’ musicians hard, but she has vowed to make the Crescent City her permanent home once again. “Going Back to Louisiana” is Carson’s ode to the state where her face and music are well known from French Quarter Fest to the Louisiana Crawfish Festival. Carson donated the song to a Katrina Compilation CD.

Jazz Fest began in 1970, and celebrates the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. Blues, R&B, gospel music, Cajun music, Zydeco, Afro-Caribbean, folk music, Latin, rock, rap music, country music, jazz and bluegrass dominate the event.

GIS Day 2008 Puts Geospatial Technology Front and Center

GIS Day 2008 Puts Geospatial Technology Front and Center

GIS Day is November 19, 2008

Redlands, CA (PRWEB) October 23, 2008

Government officials, business executives, and other professionals will participate this November in GIS Day events around the world, where they will learn the value of using geographic information system (GIS) software in their organizations.

Private businesses, government agencies, and universities will host GIS Day programs the third week of November, inviting guests to attend GIS workshops; tour map galleries; and in some cases get hands-on GIS technology training, analyze geographic data, and make maps themselves.

The official GIS Day 10th anniversary celebration will be November 19, 2008, though some events will be held earlier or later in the month or another time of the year. Visit http://www.gisday.com to find a list of activities in more than 40 countries.

Many industries, utilities, businesses, government agencies, and conservation organizations use GIS software. The technology lets users capture, store, manage, analyze, and model spatially referenced data and imagery, then publish and share that information in easy-to-visualize maps and charts, sometimes on the Web. Executives, managers, and others use the results of GIS analysis to make more informed decisions. For example, analysts working in law enforcement use the technology to detect crime patterns and use the results of the analyses to develop crime-fighting strategies.

Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI, the world leader in GIS modeling and mapping software and technology, says that GIS Day will give professionals working in fields such as electric and gas, telecommunications, transportation, natural resources, health care, public safety, and government a window into how the geospatial analysis capabilities of GIS software will help them make more informed decisions. “The events help make people aware of the power of this wonderful tool,” he says.

As part of the GIS Day celebration, Dangermond will speak at the Rocket City Geospatial Conference, November 18-20, 2008, in Huntsville, Alabama. This year’s conference will include a special plenary session that will focus on how geospatial technologies were used for various aspects of planning for and recovering from hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which recently battered the Gulf Coast of the United States.

Other activities planned for students and the general public include GIS demonstrations, geocaching “treasure hunts” using global positioning system (GPS) units, geography bees, and other games designed to heighten interest in geography and geospatial technologies.

GIS Day was launched a decade ago at an inaugural event hosted by the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. Students from area schools witnessed a demonstration of what one writer later called an “innovative geography tool for the next century.”

The young people saw how GIS software analyzed and mapped data for projects such as studying grizzly bear habitats and finding the best locations for new restaurants. “Maps speak very powerful messages,” consumer advocate and environmentalist Ralph Nader said at the event, rallying people to embrace GIS as a technology to improve their communities.

GIS professionals who answered the call will host many of the events. Dan Rose, an environmental GIS technician for the city of Topeka, Kansas, and a member of the Kansas Association of Mappers, plans to give hour-long presentations about GIS mapping to students at schools in Galesburg and Erie, Kansas. He said schools in these smaller communities often do not have large budgets for technology, and GIS Day will introduce the youngsters to concepts such as geospatial visualization and mapping.

“This is why I keep coming back–to bring them some real-world experience, showing them what I do on a daily basis, and maybe, just maybe, a few of the kids will get interested enough to pursue a career in geography or GIS/mapping themselves,” Rose said.

Some other GIS Day events include the following:

There will be an open house and software product display for GIS professionals hosted by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in Canada.

The GIS DAY 2008–Bucharest Green Map project. High school students in Bucharest, Romania, will use GIS and other geospatial technologies to make their city greener and more livable. For example, they will create a tourism map of Bucharest for pedestrians using GIS. They will also analyze the best places for commuters to park in northern Bucharest so they can find convenient public transportation into other parts of the city.

There will be GIS software demonstrations and training, a geography bee, and interactive GIS games for students hosted by Mecklenburg County in Charlotte, North Carolina.

ESRI’s Web site, http://www.gisday.com, offers multiple resources to plan an interesting and educational GIS Day including downloadable posters, flyers, and activity ideas for all different ages.

About GIS Day

GIS Day is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, the Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and ESRI.

NuWire Investor Ranks Top 10 Cash Flow Markets for 2008

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) January 7, 2008

NuWire Investor, an online financial news publication, recently released its rankings of the Top 10 Cash Flow Markets for 2008.

Appreciation is often the most significant form of profit for real estate investors, but it is harder to determine and higher in risk. Cash flow alone, rather than any potential for future appreciation, was used in ranking this list.

Rankings were determined based on an adjusted average rent payment for the area according to the rental vacancy rate. This value was compared to the amount spent monthly on mortgage payments and upkeep, including utilities, taxes and insurance. Mortgage payments were estimated based on an average loan and the median cost of a home in the area. Statistics were gathered from U.S. Census data.

Despite a slight population decline in the last few years, Rochester, N.Y., ranked number one because of its affordable housing prices, and low monthly upkeep and mortgage costs. Several Southern cities also made the list, including three from Texas. Texas also has an affordable housing market and many foreclosure opportunities for investors, particularly in San Antonio.

The Top 10 Cash Flow Markets are:

1. Rochester, New York

2. Montgomery, Alabama

3. Birmingham, Alabama

4. San Antonio, Texas

5. Garland, Texas

6. Buffalo, New York

7. Corpus Christi, Texas

8. Shreveport, Louisiana

9. Detroit, Michigan

10. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Immigrant Rights Advocate Wins 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Immigrant Rights Advocate Wins 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 3, 2008

Today Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates and The University of Alabama School of Law announced that Cheryl Little, Executive Director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center (FIAC), a not-for-profit legal assistance organization in Miami, has been awarded the 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award.

Morris Dees will present the award during a reception at Skadden, Arps’ offices in New York on November 20, 2008. Dees is the Co-Founder and Chief Trial Counsel for the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. The Center is internationally known for tracking hate groups and extremist activity, conducting tolerance training education and winning cases against white supremacists. Dees is a 1960 graduate of The University of Alabama School of Law.

The Morris Dees Justice Award was created in 2006 by Skadden, Arps and The University of Alabama School of Law to honor Dees, an Alabama graduate, for his life-long devotion to public service. The award is given annually to a lawyer who has devoted his or her career to serving the public interest and pursuing justice, and whose work has brought about positive change in the community, state, or nation. The first award recipient, in 2006, was United States District Judge William Wayne Justice, of the Eastern District of Texas. Last year’s winner was Arthur N. Read, General Counsel for Friends of Farmworkers, Inc., based in Philadelphia.

The Selection Committee recognized Ms. Little, who is considered one of the country’s leading experts on immigration law, for her dedication to upholding the rights of immigrants throughout her professional career, which spans more than two decades.

Ms. Little’s nomination for the Morris Dees Justice Award was submitted by Rev. Dr. Greta S. Reed and was joined by letters of support from a host of colleagues, legal organizations, and admirers. The breadth of support for Ms. Little extended well beyond the legal sector and represented a diverse cross-section of professional and personal endorsements.

As Rev. Dr. Reed noted in her nomination of Ms. Little, “My sense of despair – especially over the plight of Haitian refugees – gave way to hope, because someone named Cheryl Little, whom I have never met, worked tirelessly and with passion and intelligence to stand with and for the most powerless and desperate people imaginable. The Morris Dees Justice Award has been established to honor someone just like Cheryl Little.”

After graduating from law school with honors in 1985, Little became counsel for the Haitian Refugee Center. She co-founded the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center in 1996 and currently serves as the agency’s Executive Director.

In 12 years under her leadership, FIAC has grown from 10 employees with a budget of $ 400,000 to 49 employees in three offices with a budget in excess of $ 4 million.

Little and her staff have taken the lead in monitoring conditions of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention. She has documented serious concerns regarding the physical and sexual abuse of detainees at Miami’s Krome Detention Center, which led to two FBI and high-level Department of Justice investigations. Dozens of detainees were released and several officers who sexually abused female detainees were convicted.

Little was instrumental in calling attention to complaints that immigrant detainees at Florida’s Jackson County Jail were shackled to concrete slabs, beaten with batons, and shocked with electric shock shields. All of the detainees were removed from the jail, and the Justice Department issued a scathing report confirming these concerns.

ICE officials, both locally and nationally, have sought input from Ms. Little regarding detention issues. The senior counsel for INS’ Office of Field Operations, Detention, and Deportation, said, “Cheryl Little has her fingers on the pulse of the people we have in detention…She is the key to our success. My goal is to know about detention problems before Cheryl calls me.”

Ms. Little is regularly called on to testify about the plight of immigrants before assemblies such as the Organization of American States InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and the U.S. House and Senate Immigration Subcommittees.

She has been featured in award winning documentaries including Jonathan Demme’s “Killing the Dream,” “Black and White in Exile,” “They Call Us Boat People,” and “Abandoned: The Betrayal of America’s Immigrants.”

National television shows have sought out Ms. Little’s expertise, and she has discussed immigration issues on 60 Minutes, Nightline, The McNeil-Lehrer Report, PBS’s News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Frontline, The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and CNN.

For her dedication and successes on behalf of Haitian refugees, the government of Haiti made her an honorary citizen in May 2002.

Ms. Little, the 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award winner, was selected by a distinguished committee:

Julian Bond, Chairman of the Board, NAACP
Professor Norman Dorsen, New York University School of Law
Professor Bryan Fair, The University of Alabama School of Law
Kathryn O. Greenberg, Founder, New York Legal Assistance Group
Judge William Wayne Justice, 2006 Dees Award Winner
Helen B. Kim, Partner, Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP
Susan Butler Plum, Director, Skadden Fellowship Program
Dean Kenneth C. Randall, The University of Alabama School of Law
Robert C. Sheehan, Executive Partner, Skadden, Arps
Marsha E. Simms, Partner, Weil, Gotshal, & Manges LLP
Tari D. Williams, The University of Alabama School of Law
Vaughn C. Williams, Partner, Skadden, Arps

A sculpture to commemorate the award was created by Jillian Crochet, a University of Alabama art student. Crochet won the competition to design the award.

More information about the award is available at http://www.morrisdeesaward.com.

Inspiration on Green Mountain Breaks Ground 1st Quarter of 2008

Union Grove, AL (PRWEB) April 18, 2008

In early February Love Development received the final approval for construction of the much anticipated project, Inspiration on Green Mountain. This is the first Green http://www.huntsvillealabamarealestate..net [Huntsville Alabama Real Estate] Development certified by the NAHB (National Association of Home Builder’s) Standards. “We understand there are limited natural resources available”, stated Bob Spence, managing partner of Love Development. Their company recognizes the need to minimize the environmental impact by creating communities engineered as part of the natural environment.

Deliberate care is being taken by the developer to create balance and harmony with nature. The project has multiple options for green home sites and home styles. There are three types of home sites to choose from: Manor Sites, Bluff Sites, and Estate Sites. These sites have pre-engineered landscaping guidelines designed to preserve green areas on each lot. There will be many custom designed home plans to choose. The plans are Southern Mountain Vernacular homes expressive in three distinct styles: Arts & Crafts, Victorian and Classical styles.

The infrastructure construction and home site layout are in progress, and will last for several months. The first home will begin construction late in 2008. Presales of Phase-I will begin in a few months but reservations maybe submitted at anytime. Bob Spence and the Inspiration staff will be overseeing all phases of sales and construction.

Inspiration on Green Mountain offers residents world-class amenities designed to embrace nature at her finest. At Inspiration Point Clubhouse, reserved exclusively for home site owners, residents can cool off in the refreshing waters of the pool or challenge themselves with a workout in the fitness room. The outdoor pavilion area, overlooking the pool, provides panoramic bluff views of the Flint River Valley below and is perfect for outdoor entertainment and gatherings with family and friends. For a relaxing afternoon, take a walk along quiet streets or venture below the bluff to explore nature on a meandering trail of hardwood canopy, budding dogwood and cool, green landscape.

Huntsville Alabama is experiencing explosive growth and the Huntsville AL Real Estate market is strong. Inspiration on Green Mountain is a needed project of Huntsville Homes for sale. Green is becoming more important for our planet and this community will set the standard for Huntsville Alabama and northern Alabama. The surrounding area has abundant green space. With the majestic mountains, lush meadows and flowing waterways, it is a nature lover’s paradise.
