Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham Announces Buddy Palmer As New President and CEO

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham Announces Buddy Palmer As New President and CEO

Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) August 30, 2008

Buddy Palmer replaces Kathy Yarborough, who left the post in October of 2007 to join the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Former board member, Ann McMillan, has served as the interim director since October.

Immediately prior to accepting the job with the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham, Palmer served as the Executive Director of the Acadiana Arts Council in Lafayette, Louisiana. During his 13 year tenure there, he oversaw the building and programming of a community arts center, administered granting and public arts programs, worked with state legislators to secure new arts funding, and supervised Arts-In-Education and Creative Economy programs that earned state and national acclaim. Palmer is originally from Selma, Alabama.

When asked about his acceptance of the position, Palmer said, “I am personally energized by the level of passion, quality, diversity, and commitment that exists among the arts and cultural organizations in Birmingham. There is clearly great community and collaboration and I can’t wait to help advance the mission of the Cultural Alliance. I strongly believe that there is tremendous value in a collective voice.”

Palmer’s first act as the new President and CEO of the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham is to embark on a cultural tour of the Birmingham area. Within his first six weeks in the new position, he intends to visit and interact with over 50 of the cultural and art organizations in the region. “My goal is to build on the excellent work that has been done by the Cultural Alliance and explore new ways to unite the entire arts and culture sector. I intend to spend a great deal of time listening and learning as I step into this new position,” said Palmer.

This announcement comes on the heels of an exciting summer for the Cultural Alliance. The organization just completed their first Federal Grant initiative through which 13 free workshops were conducted across the region helping 238 individual artists succeed as entrepreneurs and small business people. Also via this initiative the Cultural Alliance launched the ASK ARTIE! section of the http://www.activeculture.info website. This free online cultural marketplace connects individual artists, arts/cultural organizations, venues, galleries, sector resources and services and the general public. This growing directory (over 700 entries to date) helps fuel and quantify the cultural sectors’ economic impact.

Additionally, the Cultural Alliance has worked effectively with the Birmingham City Council and Mayor Larry Langford to advocate for continued substantial financial investment in the cultural sector including direct support in the FY09 budget for over two dozen arts and cultural organizations including the Cultural Alliance. With this funding the Cultural Alliance will continue to advocate for and promote the entire cultural sector according to the Cultural Master Plan.

About the Cultural Alliance:

The Cultural Alliance is the umbrella organization providing support to the cultural sector in 12 north central Alabama counties whose residents comprise one third the population of the state. In this capacity, the Cultural Alliance serves arts and cultural organizations and working artists across all disciplines and levels of expertise.

The Cultural Alliance’s mandate is to:

oversee the implementation of the Cultural Master Plan of Greater Birmingham created by over 1,000 area residents in 2003.
advocate for the entire cultural sector including the securing of a permanent source of funds to re-grant to arts and cultural organizations;
broadly market the cultural sector helping providers reach new audiences and increase their earned income;
facilitate bringing together diverse voices throughout the cultural sector to address opportunities, problems and issues;
provide focused technical assistance to arts and cultural organizations and working artists;

The Cultural Master Plan was officially released in March 2003 by Region 2020. Birmingham Business Journal Discusses Benefits of Seedco Financial’s Green Building Program

Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) October 16, 2008

In an article of Birmingham Business Journal on October 3, 2008, Seedco Financial spoke about their Green Building Program. Seedco Financial’s non-profit programs help poor communities to flourish by providing them with the affordable financing and comprehensive technical assistance.

The organization operates by raising money from businesses within the local community and applying it to strengthen the foundation of the homes, businesses, and organizations that reside there.

The Green Building Program supports developers in an effort to provide affordable green housing to households that could otherwise not afford it.

Ivan Holloway, Vice President of Alabama Field Operations for Seedco told the Birmingham Business Journal, “One of the things we have noticed is that when people talk about green building, it is only for people who can afford the cost it takes to incorporate these aspects into houses”

The goal of green housing is to build homes that are environmentally conscious and do not promote or create waste that can be detrimental to the surrounding areas. The funding is obtained through training, loans and grants. Seedco Financial reaches out to financial intuitions within a given community, and the amount of aid they are able to give depends on the financing they are able to ascertain.

Birmingham, Alabama New Home Community Wins Best in American Living Award

Ross Bridge Neighborhood

Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) February 7, 2011

Ross Bridge, located in Hoover, Alabama was named a winner of the 2010 Best in American Living Awards (BALA). Ross Bridge won the platinum in the category of best community.

The BALA program, which is sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Design Committee, recognizes exceptional design and uses the example of these trend-setting designs to educate builders and improve residential design in all aspects of the housing industry.

The BALA winners were announced during the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla.

“The BALAs are the most prestigious awards of their kind, setting the benchmark for innovations in residential home design,” said Mike Nagel, 2010 Design Committee Chairman and Partner, MAW Chicago LLC. “We are proud to have a long history of honoring those who set the bar high by encouraging creativity, originality and imagination in our industry.”

In addition to this prestigious new home community award, Ross Bridge’s Dorothy Tayloe won the Silver Award for Best Sales Manager and the Community won the Gold Award for Best Signage.

It has taken the decades-old “planned unit development resort community” concept and infused it with the latest in traditional neighborhood development design, creating a walkable community with a unique sense of place and a vibrant community spirit.

Now in its 28th year, the Best in American Living Awards program celebrates the most creative and innovative builders, designers, land planners and interior designers in the nation. Every year, BALA winners redefine excellence for the residential building industry. Major BALA categories include home design, room design and community development.

For additional information about BALA and a listing of all the 2010 award winners, visit “2010 BALA Portfolio,” an online publication that includes a review of design trends, and scores of images. Additional Information about the BALA program can be found at http://www.nahb.org/BALA.

Residents of Chandler and Birmingham Consider Home Security Issues

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } –>

Chandler, Arizona and Birmingham, Alabama may not seem like they have a whole lot in common, and indeed, the cities are quite different from one another. The cities actually have similar population sizes approaching the mid 200,000 mark, but whereas Chandler stands on its own, Birmingham has a metropolitan area with a population of over 1 million residents. Today their economies are somewhat different, but are both heavily dependent on industry. Whether you are headed to Birmingham to work at one of its major corporations or are working at Intel’s environmentally sustainable factory in Chandler, home security will be important no matter where you settle.

If you are moving to Birmingham you need to decide whether you want to live amongst the city lights or if you’d rather distance yourself by relocating to one of the city’s many suburbs. The city center of Chandler was heavily impacted by suburbanization during the boom, causing it to become more impoverished. In the late 90s the area faced some difficult times, but today the situation has much improved and the popular trend to repopulate the cities has begun. But really the most important thing to know is that no matter where you go, crime can happen anywhere.

Fortunately there are many home security measures you can take to combat crime. Setting up a fence around your property is one way not only to keep criminals at bay, but also prevents pests from destroying your landscaping. Exterior lighting systems are also good at keeping criminals at bay. A system of motion sensor and lights on timers works great because it discourages criminals from approaching the property, and the motion sensor lights also alert you that there might be something going on. And of course, remembering to lock your doors and windows when you go out is one of the most effective measures you can take every single day.

For the ultimate protection in either Birmingham or Chandler, setting up a home alarm system is key. In both cities you will find agencies that offer security advice as well as recommendations as to which alarm and security systems to buy. Talking with a security professional is a good idea, especially if you have never looked into alarms before. A professional can also give you advice on how to keep your home well protected during all kinds of situations. For example, how to prepare your home before going on vacation or what additional security measures you should take if you have children.

Despite the differences between the cities of Chandler, Arizona and Birmingham, Alabama, you’ll be able to find the perfect place to live within either community. And once you get settled into your new home, you’ll need to start thinking about how to keep your property and your family protected. With today’s ever increasing crime rates, being able to properly defend your house and ward off criminals is all the more important. Fencing and lighting systems are great for keeping criminals at bay, and remembering to lock your doors and windows is one of the most effective actions you can take. And with a home alarm system installed, you’ll be all the more safe at home.

With a first alert alarm in Chandler, AZ your house will be the most well protected on the block. Check out the latest alarm devices in birmingham, alabama.

Staging your Birmingham Home

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Staging your Birmingham, Alabama home to improve both its chances of sale and selling value is a fantastic idea. There are professional home stagers available almost anywhere, but you yourself can achieve the same effect if you do a bit of research and spend the time to do the job right.

The focus of staging is to bring out the selling qualities of your home while making it as attractive to buyers as possible. A good place to start is by doing a once over of the home and clearing away anything that you do not use on a daily basis. This includes taking away surplus furniture that unnecessarily crowds some rooms. It is good to go minimalist when staging a home. Try to create an atmosphere where viewers can imagine their belongings occupying the home. Buyers like to be able to imagine their furniture and belongings in your home without the bother of having to navigate around your things.

One thing that many people forget to deal with is any odors that may be in the home. Living in your house it is easy to become accustomed to the small of your home. This is not to say that it is a bad smell, but buyers will take better note of a pleasant smell such as freshly baked cookies,.Try to avoid anything that smells like cleaners, such as heavy lemon or pine.

Take note of the things you have on the countertops, anything that is not a daily necessity should be packed away as it will only be seen as clutter; this also applies to desks and tables. Its also a good idea to remove any personal items such as family pictures, mementos and such, these things all make it more difficult for viewers to place themselves in your home.
