Music Fans Converge for Nation’s Premier Songwriting Festival on Sugar White Sand of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

This songwriters festival showcases Grammy Award-winning artists, chart topping writers and up-and-coming musicians in intimate settings during a 10-day span in November.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Ala. (PRWEB) November 6, 2009

What began as an end-of-season party for local performers has blossomed into one of the nation’s top songwriters’ festivals, which is now celebrating its silver anniversary on the sugar white beaches of the Alabama Gulf Coast. Honored as a top 20 November event by the Southeast Tourism Society, the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival showcases Grammy Award-winning artists, chart topping writers and up-and-coming musicians in intimate settings at various venues throughout the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area.

“We are thrilled to welcome this extraordinary caliber of writers and their devoted fans to our coastal community,” said Mike Foster, vice-president of marketing for the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau. “When the fans are not listening to these draw-dropping jam sessions, their days are as action-packed or relaxing as they choose. Whether landing a monster fish aboard a chartered cruise, sinking a hole in one on the championship golf courses, or checking out the area’s diverse ecosystem on a nature cruise, these music fans have an almost endless selection of activities to experience in the area. And the great thing about visiting the Gulf Shores / Orange Beach area during November is the opportunity to book a phenomenal lodging property ranging from a condo, beach house or hotel at an unbelievable value-packed rate.”

This annual 10-day festival runs November 12 through 22 and pays tribute a night watchman of the legendary Flora-Bama roadhouse, who had an extraordinary passion for songwriters and their craft. Brown worked for 28 years at the Flora-Bama until his retirement at the age of 91 when he was featured on Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story.”

Beginning with a November 11 kickoff party at the Flora-Bama, the schedule continues with an extensive list of live performances highlighted by two showcases from the nation’s top performance rights organizations, such as the ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. Other festival activities include a celebrity golf tournament and scramble, a Night of Memories in honor of songwriters past and a two-day songwriting seminar presented by ASCAP and Middle Tennessee State University.

7th Annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival Announces Special Screenings

7th Annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival Announces Special Screenings

Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) August 28, 2005

The Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, recognized as one of the “Top Ten Film Festival Vacations” by Chris Gore’s Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, has announced the special screenings for the festival. These films will be eligible for an Audience Choice Award, but are not part of the festival’s juried competition.

The Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is set for September 23-25 in Birmingham’s historic theatre district. In addition to the 20 feature-length films that will be screened competitively, Sidewalk will also be featuring four special screenings to celebrate Film For The People.

Sidewalk’s mantra to bring “new films to a new audience” continues for its seventh year with the following special screenings:

“My Big Fat Independent Movie” (80 min. / Color), directed by Philip Zlotorynski and written by Chris Gore (IFC’s Ultimate Film Fanatic, author of The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide and publisher of FilmThreat.com), is a spoof that parodies some of the indie film world’s most renowned movies such as “Memento,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Magnolia,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Amelie,” “Run Lola Run,” “El Mariachi,” “The Good Girl,” “Pi,” “Swingers” and many others.

“My Big Fat Independent Movie” is the festival’s “Kick-Off Screening” on Thursday, September 22 at 10 pm at Workplay Theatre. Chris Gore is scheduled to be in attendance.

“The Baxter” (94 min. / Color), directed by Michael Showalter, follows in the style of a Howard Hawks comedy. In every romantic comedy there is always that scene at the end where the leading man barges through the chapel doors just as the leading lady is about to marry the Wrong Guy. THE BAXTER is about the guy left at the altar. Starring: Michael Showalter, Elizabeth Banks, Michelle Williams, Justin Theroux and Michael Ian Black.

“The Baxter” will be the festival’s Closing Night Film, which will be screened on Sunday, September 25 at 5 pm at the Alabama Theatre.

• “Reel Paradise” (110 min. / Color), directed by Steve James, journeys with indie film “guru” John Pierson as he takes his family to Fiji for one year to run the world’s most remote movie theater.

“Reel Paradise” will be screened on Sunday, September 25 at 2 pm at the Harbert Center.

“Be Here To Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt” (110 min. / Color), directed by Margaret Brown, explores the life of Townes Van Zandt, widely recognized as a true songwriter’s songwriter. Having released dozens of albums since the mid 1960s, Van Zandt, who died in 1997, solidified his place in America’s musical pantheon. The film includes, among others, Van Zandt, Willie Nelson, Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Guy Clarke and Kris Kristofferson.

“Be Here To Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt” will be screened on Saturday, September 24 at 2 pm at the Harbert Center.

The 2005 Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is set for September 23-25 in downtown Birmingham’s historic Theatre District. Opening Night tickets ($ 10 in advance / $ 13 at the door) and Weekend Passes ($ 25 / $ 20 for Sidewalk Members and Students with valid ID) are available through Opening Night, Sept. 23, at the Alys Stephens Center Box Office at 1200 Tenth Avenue South or charge-by-phone by calling 975-ARTS or 1-877-ART-TIKS. Single Film Tickets will be available for $ 7 each (or three for $ 15) during the festival weekend. Additional information is available online at the festival website at http://www.sidewalkfest.com

Sponsors of the 2005 Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival include: Stella Artois, the Law Offices of Archie Lamb, Parisian, Birmingham Weekly, WRAX 100.5 FM, AL.COM, WBRC Fox 6, Charter Communications, Bright House Networks, WBHM 90.3, Birmingham magazine, Filmmaker Magazine and Birmingham-Jefferson Film Office. The festival is made possible, in part, by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Alabama Power Foundation, and the Jefferson County Commission through the Jefferson County Community Arts Fund administered by the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham.

The Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is a project of the Alabama Moving Image Association, Inc., a publicly supported 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to inspire, encourage and support films and filmmaking in Alabama.

7TH annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival Announces Opening Night Film

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (PRWEB) August 28, 2005

AMERICANO will open the 7th Annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival on Friday, September 23 at 8 pm at the Alabama Theatre, according to festival director and co-founder Erik Jambor.

AMERICANO, a film by Kevin Noland, stars Joshua Jackson (“Dawson’s Creek” and CRUEL INTENTIONS), Leonora Varela (“Arrested Development”, INNOCENT VOICES, TAIS-TOI), Timm Sharp (“Six Feet Under” and A NINJA PAYS HALF MY RENT), Ruthanna Hopper (DANCING AT THE BLUE IGUANA) and Dennis Hopper (EASY RIDER).

The cross cultural love story is about Chris McKinley (Joshua Jackson), a recent college graduate whose backpacking experience through Europe with his friends culminates at the infamous San Fermin festival in Pamplona, Spain. The film is set against the backdrop of Spain’s notorious “running of the bulls” at Pamplona. AMERICANO captures actual moments during the festival – including footage of the daily bull runs and nightly celebrations.

Kevin Noland, Joshua Jackson, Leonora Varela, Timm Sharp and Ruthanna Hopper are scheduled to attend the Opening Night Celebration and participate in a Q & A following the film. This will mark the festival’s first time to have all the major stars of the film in attendance on Opening Night.

“We are thrilled to have Noland’s AMERICANO open our festival,” Jambor said. “This film has received a lot of critical praise over the last few months and having the chance to bring it to Birmingham, where people are eager to see new films, is truly groundbreaking for the festival.”

Other awards to be presented this evening will be announced the week of the festival.
