Youth Villages Named One of Top 50 Best Nonprofits to Work For 2010

Memphis, TN (Vocus) April 8, 2010

The NonProfit Times and Best Companies Group have named Youth Villages as one of the 50 Best Nonprofit Organizations to Work For in the United States. One of the largest providers of services to troubled children and their families in the country, Youth Villages was founded in Memphis in 1986. This year, 2,300 counselors, teachers and staff will help more than 15,000 children with serious emotional and behavioral problems and their families.

Counselors work from 64 locations in 11 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The annual survey and award program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the non-profit sector. The 2010 list of 50 Best Nonprofit Organizations to Work For were chosen in a two-part process. The primary part, which made up 75 percent of the evaluation, consisted of a randomized employee survey. The survey allowed employees to rank their organizations in eight key areas including leadership and planning, corporate culture and communications, work environment, relationship with supervisor and pay/benefits. The second part consisted of evaluating each organization’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics.

Youth Villages and the American Heart Association were the only two nonprofits in the top 50 with more than 2,000 employees.

Other organizations honored include the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Lance Armstrong Foundation and Keep America Beautiful Inc. The complete list is published in The NonProfit Times’ April 2010 issue.

“This is a great honor for Youth Villages,” said Patrick W. Lawler, chief executive officer. “Our employees are on the front lines every day, helping children who have sometimes suffered from abuse and neglect and have very challenging mental health issues. On our residential campuses, they are responsible for meeting children’s needs 24 hours a day; through our in-home and community programs, counselors respond at all hours to families in crisis. It’s inspiring to know they gave our organization such top ratings.

“Our consistently high success rates and continual improvements in services to young people are a result of the hard work of the Youth Villages team. We’ve strived to provide our employees with a supportive work environment and culture, good benefits, the latest technology and comprehensive training. This award shows that we’re on the right track, but we always are driven to make Youth Villages even better.”

Youth Villages is a major employer of college graduates in the fields of social work, psychology and counseling in the areas it serves. Nearly a hundred college students will be participating in the organization’s internship program this year.

“We expect that this honor will increase traffic to our career website,” Lawler said. “If you are passionate about helping children and families, Youth Villages definitely is a great place to work.”

Youth Villages is a private nonprofit organization that offers a wide array of programs, including intensive in-home services, residential treatment, foster care and adoption, transitional living services, mentoring and crisis services. Youth Villages’ focus on strengthening families consistently produces an 80 percent success rate of children living successfully at home or in a home-like setting two years after completing a Youth Villages program. Youth Villages has been recognized by Harvard Business School and U.S. News & World Report, and was identified by The White House in 2009 as one of the nation’s most promising results-oriented nonprofit organizations. Mobile Works President Sydney Raine Receives State Of Alabama Workforce Development Partners In Progress Award-Raine Received Award for Work in Providing Disaster Relief Jobs in the City Of Mobile, Mobile County and Other Local Municipalities

MOBILE, AL (PRWEB) November 14, 2004

Mobile Works Inc. announced that Mobile Works President Sydney Raine received the Partners In Progress Award for his work in both securing $ 407,418 in national emergency grant monies from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide temporary jobs for the City of Mobile, Mobile County and other municipalities within the county of Mobile for Hurricane Ivan disaster relief—and in using the monies to quickly implement actual jobs for Mobile area workers.

The Partners in Progress Award was presented to Raine by Dr. Tim Alford, Director of Workforce Development for the State of Alabama, on Thursday, November 4, 2004. Dr. Alford presented the award to Raine at a ceremony held at the State of Alabama Workforce Development Conference, which was held from November 3-5 in Birmingham. The award honors business, government and cultural leaders for making progress in workforce development a priority within their organizations and within their local Alabama communities.

Raine worked quickly with officials from the City of Mobile, Mobile County and several other municipalities in Mobile County to secure their agreement to provide jobs to local workers to aid in hurricane cleanup.

Within one week of notification of receipt of the grant monies, Raine’s quick action ensured that 77 jobs were filled throughout the greater Mobile area—out of the 105 jobs that could have been funded with the grant, for nearly 75% implementation. What makes this unique is that Raine spearheaded an effort that made Mobile the only county in the state to actually take advantage of the $ 7.5 million grant made available to Alabama by the Department of Labor for Hurricane Ivan disaster relief throughout the entire state.

“I am honored and privileged to accept this award, but this Partners in Progress Award really recognizes the dedication of the Mobile Works staff and the spirit of cooperation given to me by the City of Mobile, Mobile County and our other local municipalities,” said Raine. “They were truly our partners in this endeavor and the real winners were the jobseekers. We look forward to continued partnership with every entity involved.”

Mobile Works Inc., a local partnership of business, education, labor and community leaders, provides businesses with training, leadership, labor market information and employment programs designed to stimulate local business by meeting the needs of Mobile area businesses while increasing the available labor pool of skilled jobseekers in the Mobile area.

Since its inception in 2000, the group has invested more than $ 19 million overall to support Mobile area job and educational programs. In addition, in the 2004-2005 fiscal year alone, Mobile Works will invest nearly $ 4.9 million dollars in jobs, training and economic initiatives for all of Mobile County.
